Who Decides What We Forget? Collective Memory(ies), New Technologies, Media, and the So-called ā€œPost-Truthā€

In a constantly evolving information landscape, the ability to shape narratives and influence collective memory has become a crucial issue, especially in relation to ongoing and emerging conflicts. This session will examine the forces that determine what is remembered and what is forgotten, particularly in light of the transformative impact of new technologies and media. It will explore how digital platforms, algorithms, and curated content can be used to conceal facts, police language, shape debate, and construct, deconstruct, and reconstruct our understanding of history and public discourse. The session will critically examine the challenges of disinformation, historical revisionism, and the difficulties of discerning truth in an age of information overload, often manipulated. Discussions will focus on artists’ and activists’ practices that engage with the politics of and preservation of memory and the promotion of critical media literacy.

Resistance of the Commons: Rethinking, Reviving, and Reclaiming the Commons in the Age of Predatory and Extractive INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS

This crucial session will address the essential question of renewing and protecting the commons in an era marked by aggressive resource extraction and predatory trade practices. Participants will explore the concept of ā€œcommon goodsā€ā€”encompassing natural resources, cultural heritage, knowledge production, and public services—and the threats they face from state and non-state actors driven by greed and the thirst for power. The session will aim to highlight emerging resistances to these predatory forces. Discussions will focus on the role of community initiatives, Indigenous knowledge systems, and international solidarity in safeguarding the commons while also critically interrogating the very notion of ā€œpreservation.ā€
